Can my child practise Hindi with ChatGPT?

The short answer. Yes, if your child is 13 or older and you set it up well. ChatGPT's voice mode speaks good Hindi. With a clear prompt it can be a decent speaking partner for a motivated teenager. For a child under 13 it needs a parent's account and a parent sitting alongside. Younger children who understand Hindi but won't answer usually need something built for them.

I build a Hindi speaking app for children, so you might expect me to say no. I won't. A lot of parents ask me this, and many of them have already tried it. Here is what I'd tell a friend.

First, the age rules

OpenAI's terms say a ChatGPT user must be at least 13, and anyone under 18 needs a parent's permission. Teen accounts get extra protections, and parents can link their account to a teen's. So for a 7-year-old, the honest setup is your phone, your account, and you in the room. That is fine for a few sessions. It is hard to keep up every day.

A prompt you can paste

Out of the box, ChatGPT talks like a helpful adult. It gives long answers and asks several questions at once. It will switch to English the moment your child does. A child who is nervous about speaking needs the opposite. Paste this at the start of the conversation, then switch to voice:

You are a friendly Hindi speaking partner for my child, who is [age] years old. My child understands Hindi but is shy about speaking it. Rules: 1. Speak only simple Hindi. Keep every reply under 15 words. 2. Ask one short question at a time, about everyday things: school, food, games, pets. 3. If my child is stuck, offer two choices, for example "दाल या पनीर?" 4. If my child answers in English, say their idea back in Hindi and ask them to try saying it. 5. Never say "wrong" or explain grammar. If a sentence has a mistake, repeat it correctly in your next reply, naturally, and carry on. 6. After ten minutes, say goodbye warmly in Hindi.

Rules 4 and 5 matter most. Correcting a child mid-sentence is the fastest way to make them stop. Saying the correct version back naturally, the way a grandparent would, teaches the same thing without the sting. Teachers call this a recast.

What to watch for with a younger child

  1. It may answer things your child never said. Speech recognition in any app can hear the TV, a sibling or a fan and turn it into words. Adults notice and repeat themselves. A child just gets confused. We had to build filters for this in our own app. Try a quiet room.
  2. It drifts back to adult length. Over a long chat, replies tend to grow again. If you hear long paragraphs, paste the rules again.
  3. It has no plan for next week. Each conversation is good or bad on its own. Nothing decides that this week is about past tense, or notices that your child keeps mixing up मेरा and मेरी.
  4. You won't see what changed. You can scroll back through the chat, but nobody tells you whether your child is saying more than a month ago.
  5. It is an open tool. It will follow a child anywhere they take the conversation. You are the guardrail, which is another reason to stay in the room.

When ChatGPT is enough

A teenager who already speaks some Hindi, wants to get better, and will sit down on their own. For that child, a good prompt and a daily habit can go a long way. Save the prompt as a custom instruction so they don't have to paste it every time.

When a dedicated partner helps

A child between 5 and 12. A child who understands everything and answers in English. A family that wants to see, week by week, whether it is working. That is the child we built Speak with Kiki for.
